Cheney — Curtiss B. Humphrey passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2024, at the age of 89. Curt is survived by his wife, Bette; his older brother, Arthur; his children, Sam, Heidi, Heather, Kristin, Leila, Carol, James, Tayva, and John; as well as 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Curt began teaching at Spokane Community College in 1966. He then transferred to Spokane Falls Community College which was established in 1967. He was one of the original faculty members of the Math Department. During his 49-year career at CCS, he developed a very successful astronomy class. He loved camping and traveling. At home, he enjoyed working on projects outdoors and spending time with his large family. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on April 27 from 1 - 4 pm for Curt. Kathryn “Katie” Jean (Brown) Sander, 75, of Millwood, WA, passed away at home on March 30, 2024, with her loving family at her side. Born to Walter and Mildred (Davies) Brown on September 25, 1948, Katie grew up in Waukesha and Green Bay, WI, where she developed her lifelong fondness for the Green Bay Packers. She studied dental hygiene at Marquette University, where she met Dan Sander, and worked as a dental hygienist until she and Dan married in 1972 and moved to Spokane. They made their home there over the next 52 years and raised two children, Karl and Jessalynn. Katie later worked as an administrative assistant at Discovery School, where both her children were students, and went on to work as an instructional assistant in Spokane Public Schools’ Learning Assistance Program for several years. She enjoyed taking in the natural beauty of places like Glacier National Park, MT, the Oregon Coast, and especially Alaska. She particularly loved visits to Leavenworth, WA, and spending time at Diamond Lake, WA. A talented artisan in her free time, Katie’s handiwork decorates the homes and Christmas trees of friends and relatives far and wide, an enduring testament to her warmth and generosity. In addition to being a loyal Packer fan (and shareholder), she avidly followed the Gonzaga University Men’s and Women’s basketball teams. Her family is grateful for the opportunity to enjoy both teams’ recent tournament runs with her. Katie was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her husband, Dan; brother, Stephen Brown, Scottsdale, AZ; children, Karl (Karissa) Sander, Oak Harbor, WA, and Jessalynn (Jim Karl), Spokane Valley; and granddaughter, Natalie Karl (of whom she was always immensely proud). Katie had requested no funeral or memorial service, though her family looks forward to continuing to celebrate her life at every opportunity, especially when gathering with friends and relatives. Spokane — Donald “Don” W. McWhorter, age 79, passed away on April 4, 2024, in Spokane, WA. Don was a dedicated man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He shared 59 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Linda. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Don will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Don served in the Coast Guard for 7 years and later went on to have a successful 25-year career as a Captain with the Seattle Fire Department. He was a respected member of the community and touched the lives of many. In his free time, Don enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, and most importantly, spending time with his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Linda; daughters, Dawn, Denise, and Donna “Mischele,”; and grandchildren, Chelsie, Brittnie, Jacob, Adam, Haylie, Noah, Amber, Austin, and Alia; as well as nine great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his father, Amzie; mother, Minnie; son, Dave; and brother, Roy. A Celebration of Life memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, at Rockwood Retirement inside The Summit Building event center at 1:00 pm in Spokane, WA. Spokane — William (Bill) Albert Schultz born at home on September 13, 1933, a beautiful 14lb baby, our 6’7 gentle giant left this world as he came into it, with the people he loved most, on February 10, 2024. Bill was born in Spokane to Harry and Eunice (Gardner) Schulz. Adventurous and always learning, Bill was entrepreneurial as a grade-schooler at Willard Elementary. Mowing lawns, delivering papers, selling wood, and raising and butchering rabbits during WW2. He worked at the railyard, and in the icehouse at 16. As a teen he also worked at Felts Field at the airport in the hangar and Krause Nursery, developing his love for plants and landscaping. In 1951, he graduated from Rogers HS at just 17 and went to work at Brown Trailer Co. for 5 years doing a dangerous job that men 2 and 3 times his age were too afraid to do. He ended up working at WWP for 39 years. Starting as a crewman/welder/ backhoe operator, he worked his way up to Gas Construction Superintendent. He could tell you where every single gas line in Spokane County was. He was self-taught in mechanics & construction and could do anything. In high school, he drove a 35’ Ford & soon after, chartreuse 50’ Ford Convertible. He even started his car club called the Vampires. Everyone in town knew who he was because of his beautiful cars. He spent his childhood at his parent’s lake cabin at Newman Lake/Honeymoon Bay, swimming & boating on his 1946 Higgins wooden boat (which he still has) He met the love of his life, Sherryl on a blind date in 1965 & they married in 67’. The two enjoyed nearly 59 years together going to the Oregon coast, wintering at their home in Yuma, & working hard on their many rental houses. Bill was an AMAZING landscape architect. His backyard with a waterfall, rock walls, ponds, pathways, ornamental trees & a model train, on the Little Spokane River, are a testament to his many talents. He looked like a movie star, had a heart as big as his dimples & was equally funny as he was handsome. His generosity & kindness were immeasurable. EVERYONE considered him to be their best friend & everyone who knew him, loved him. His incredible memory, even on the last day, was something that people would judge a genius by. If you could live to be a 90-year-old and still have your wits, looks, & kindness until your last breath like he did, then you have more than most people would ever hope for in life. Bill was a fighter from the time he got Rheumatic Fever as a kid, to 3 bouts of bladder cancer, a stroke, & numerous close calls over the years. We thought he was going to be with us forever. Preceded in passing were his parents, Harry and Eunice; brothers, Bob and Larry; and sister, Rose Bowen. Survived by the love of his life, Sherryl; and daughters, Sherene (Jeff Bedard), Erika Sparrow (Brian), and Lanelle (son Zane). His family meant everything to him & his love for them was projected to the world. He was the family’s beacon in every storm & the voice of reason & champion for any issue. Because Bill LOVED a party, we are having a BIG celebration of his wonderful life later in April. Scottsdale — James P. Senna passed away peacefully at home on March 10, 2024. Jim was born in Spokane, WA, to Ed and Eva Senna on November 13, 1934. He spent his early years in Spokane and attended Lewis and Clark High School, graduating in 1952. Jim attended and graduated from the University of Washington in 1956 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He subsequently graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 1959. As a law student, he joined the Army ROTC and eventually earned a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. After basic training he was assigned to the Combat Development Experimental Center at Fort Ord, CA, eventually becoming a Legal Officer working with the General’s staff. Upon completion of his service, Jim was hired by the Olympia Brewing Co. in their legal department. Jim worked tirelessly for twenty years, rising to the position of President. After leaving the brewery, Jim became the CEO of Shee Atika Corporation, a native corporation based in Sitka, AK. This was a most rewarding position and near the end of his time with Shee Atika, Jim was honored by the Tlingit Coho Clan as they adopted him into the tribe during a 24-hour ceremony and gave him the name “Choo Woo”. Throughout his work life and into retirement, Jim was dedicated to serving others in whatever capacity he was needed, including serving on the board of directors of Heritage Bank for many years and serving as President of Troon Country Club. Jim retired to Scottsdale, AZ, with his beloved wife, Margaret. Together they spent many hours playing golf, traveling, playing with grandkids, and just enjoying life. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Eva; and by his brother, Gene. Jim is survived by his wife, Margaret; his first wife, Sandra Senna; and their four children, Susan Lindskog (Blake), Sarah (Greg Hopkins), Stephen (Karin), and David; and nephew, Andrew Senna. Jim is also survived by his stepchildren, Scott Taylor (Lisa), Brian Taylor, and Megan Taylor. He is also survived by many beloved grandchildren. Jim was deeply grateful for the beautiful life he was given and if you were a friend or acquaintance, please take a moment to remember him and know that he died happy and without regrets.
